I have loved this Slytherine/Nagini snake candelabra for many years, since it first came out at Pottery Barn. But at $129, I could just enter justify it no matter how much I wanted. Sure, I could have saved up for it over time but it still seemed crazy to spend that much money on a candle stick holder.
I really wanted it and have gone back to the website many times to look at it, always talking myself out of buying it at the last minute.
I figured it wasn’t meant to be mine, and even trying to figure out how tonmake it myself proved hard. I couldn’t find a big enough snake, and tinfoil and clay didn’t coke across as long lasting.
Though this year I found a woman who made this candelabra herself, her Blog is called Boxwood and Spruce. She has a lot of great home decor inspirations. Her snake candle holder looked amazing and I immediately knew I needed it right away.
It’s really lovely and while it doesn’t look exactly rhe same, it looks amazing and even my husband said it looks better than pottery barn. So of course it’s awesome.
This candelabra cost me around $46 to make. But that allowed me to make two snake candelabra, that hold eight candles, and still have plenty of candles left over, from a pack of fourteen.
This project was very quick and very easy to throw together in one afternoon.
The only thing I did not need to pay for was the paint as I already had craft paint st home in black and gold. But you can spray paint it instead of you prefer.
I did leave one snake pure black and the other black with hold details.
Now onto the supplies you’ll need to make your own.
Rubber snakes– 2 at $9.99 a piece. Gorilla super glue- -$5.04. Pipe end caps, or pvc pipe end caps. You can use plastic, metal or copper. I just used plastic. $.75 each, ends up being $7 for 10. Got extra in case I messed up. Black and gold paint spray or craft paint. Black tapper candles– 14 pack for $13.98
I suggest being very careful with your snake after you have painted them. If you bend the snake the paint will separate and you will see the yellow snake underneath. So gentle movements.
Once you have all your supplies you can get started. Cover your table or workspace in newspaper or something else to protect your space. Then begin to add just enough super glue to each end cap, you want to make sure that each end cap is snug in between each bend of the snake, and won’t separate. Hold each cap for about 30sec or until you feel like the glue has tried and adhered well. Add a cap into each bend of the snake, except for the neck that is left free. With the tail you can leave it alone, lightly wrapped around itself, or tightly wrapped around the end. Once your glue has dried you can begin to paint. If you choose to spray paint, do so in a well ventilated area, preferably outside. You can also choose craft paint, and once dry flip over and do the other side. You can then paint completely with good paint or dive gold details. You choice how it looks. After you’ve let it dry completely place it where you like. I melted my candles a bit at the bottom and then placed then inside the holder so they wouod stand straight.
