Everyone loves either fries, tater tots, or onion rings when they’re having a burger and since having to go dairy free, trying to make my favorite foods dairy free hasn’t always been easy but luckily I’ve found some good recipes for my favorite foods and have been able to make them healthier too, which is always great.
Traditionally onion rings are made with milk and eggs, but I needed them dairy free so i came up with a recipe that’s super simple and still turns out amazing when fried just like traditional onion rings.
I like to switch up how I make my own onion rings depending on how I feel, some days I’ll use a milk batter and some days I’ll use a yogurt batter. Though you have to be careful with a yogurt batter as dairy free yogurt is much thinner and less creamier than dairy yogurt.
But the one thing i am consistent on is that my flour always comes with some fine crushed breadcrumbs, that’s what I feel really holds it together and it just tastes amazing. Then of course I finish it off with some homemade horseradish sauce, just like outback does.
Dairy Free Onion Rings
Ingredients
1 medium sized onion
Oil for frying For the wet batter
Wet Batter
1/2c Dairy free milk of choice
1/2tbsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
1/4c dairy free yogurt
For the dry batter:
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tbsp corn starch
1tsp baking powder
1 tbsp dried parsley
Salt to taste
1 tsp garlic powder
1tsp onion powder
1tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp black pepper powder
1/2 cup panko bread crumbs (personal preferance)
Use seasonings and spices to your hearts content, I like mine spicier sometimes so I’ll add more heat than just 1 tsp, so add what you like.
For the sauce
Directions
Wash and cut your onion into nice slices of a width of your choosing. You can also cut them into petals if you’d like something for a larger group or easier to snack on size. Once done slicing the onion, separate the slices and lay them on a baking sheet so they’re easy for you to grab when frying. But you can also bake these as well.
Next make your wet batter by mixing all the ingredients together. Then follow that with your dry batter by mixing the dry ingredients together.
Begin heating up your oil, at a medium heat. If you have a thermometer go ahead and use it so you can keep your oil at the right temperature. You’ll know its ready when you use your hand to flick water into the oil and it sizzles. You’ll want about 2 to 4in of oil in the pan, depending on the pan size and shape you use. Just enough that they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan and the oil, pan and onions don’t burn.
Begin dipping your onions into the wet batter and get a good coating. I like to use a fork o tongs for this, as I do not like getting my fingers dirty. Choose what’s right for you. Then dip them into the flour mix and coat evenly then place them into the frying oil, but make sure not to crowd the pan so they cook well.
Once done, allow them to cool on a baking sheet or cookie rack, while you make your sauce. Once done, enjoy.
